English

Save Your people and bless Your heritage; tend them and carry them for ever. Our soul longs for the LORD; He is our Help and Shield. For in Him our hearts rejoice, for in His holy name we have trusted. May Your loving-kindness, LORD, be upon us, as we have put our hope in You. Show us, LORD, Your loving-kindness and grant us Your salvation. Arise, help us and redeem us for the sake of Your love. I am the LORD your God who brought you up from the land of Egypt: open your mouth wide and I will fill it. Happy is the people for whom this is so; happy is the people whose God is the LORD. As for me, I trust in Your loving-kindness; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD for He has been good to me.

A psalm of David. A song for the dedication of the House. I will exalt You, LORD, for You have lifted me up, and not let my enemies rejoice over me. LORD, my God, I cried to You for help and You healed me. LORD, You lifted my soul from the grave; You spared me from going down to the pit. Sing to the LORD, you His devoted ones, and give thanks to His holy name. For His anger is for a moment, but His favor for a lifetime. At night there may be weeping, but in the morning there is joy. When I felt secure, I said, “I shall never be shaken.” LORD, when You favored me, You made me stand firm as a mountain, but when You hid Your face, I was terrified. To You, LORD, I called; I pleaded with my LORD: “What gain would there be if I died and went down to the grave? Can dust thank You? Can it declare Your truth? Hear, LORD, and be gracious to me; LORD, be my help.” You have turned my sorrow into dancing. You have removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may sing to You and not be silent. LORD my God, for ever will I thank You.

מִזְמוֹר שִׁיר חֲנֻכַּת הַבַּיִת A song for the dedication of the House: According to Rashi, David wrote this psalm to be sung at the inauguration of the Temple, though he knew it would only take place in the lifetime of his son, Solomon. The psalm first entered the siddur as a prayer to be said on Hanukka, and was later adopted as part of the daily prayers. Its content is beautifully suited to be a bridge between the Morning Blessings and the Pesukei DeZimra. The connecting theme is the restoration of life as a reason for giving praise. The Psalmist recounts a crisis when his life, hitherto secure, was suddenly in danger. It was then that he prayed to God, “What gain would there be if I died and went down to the grave? ... Can dust thank You?” So we, waking to the life of a new day, express our sense of joy, “so that my soul may sing to You and not be silent.”
