and swear by His name. For He is your glory and He is the God who performed with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have witnessed. Your ancestors were but seventy souls when they went down to Egypt, and now the LORD your God has made you as many as the stars of the sky. You shall love the LORD your God, and keep what He gives you to guard, His statutes, His laws and His commands, every day of your lives. And know this day - for your children do not know and did not see what the LORD your God has taught you - His greatness, His mighty hand and His outstretched arm; His signs and the acts He has performed in Egypt, against Pharaoh, king of Egypt and all his land; and what He did to all the army of Egypt, its horses and its chariots, which He drowned in the waters of the Sea of Reeds before their eyes, as they chased after you - and the LORD destroyed them, gone to this very day; and what He did for you in the desert, until you came to this place; and what He did to Datan and to Aviram, the sons of Eliav, son of Reuben, when the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them, their families and their tents and everything that was theirs, in the very midst of all Israel - it is your eyes that have seen all the great work of the LORD that He has done. And you shall keep all the command that I charge you with on this day, that you may be strong and come and inherit the land that you are soon to cross over to and inherit; and so that you may live long upon the land that the LORD promised to give your ancestors and their descendants; a land flowing with milk and honey.

פרשת התשובה

THE CHAPTER OF REPENTANCE

This passage comes from the end of Moses’ final address. After describing the blessings which might be conferred by keeping the covenant and the repercussions of breaking it, Moses promises the people that the punishment incurred will not be irrevocable; the gates of repentance are always open, and by returning to God the people might yet be redeemed. These verses were later interwoven into the prayer for the State of Israel (page 588) to express the hope that this first stage of redemption will lead to its full flowering, with the ingathering of all exiles and the opening of our hearts to truly loving and revering God.
