Please, LORD who prepares sustenance for every creation, and calls forth clothing for all who have been made, and sends them their nourishment – grant me nourishment in plenty, provide for me and sustain me, and grant me and all the members of my household, and all of Israel, sustenance in plenty, honorable and obtained in serenity, without suffering, in legal ways and not forbidden ones, with honor and without disgrace, a sustenance with no shame or humiliation. A sustenance by which You will never make me needy of the gifts of other people, but only of Your full, broad hand; a sustenance that will allow me to engage in study of Your holy, pure and perfect Torah, pure meat, easily prepared; my bread and the bread of the people of my household – all our needs before we come to need them – so that my mind may be free of all worry to engage in study of the words of the Torah and to fulfill the commands, and to dwell in peace at my table, honorable, with all my household, without waiting to be invited to the tables of others. So that I will not be subject to any man, and that I will have the yoke of no man upon my shoulders, but only the yoke of Your kingship, making me serve You wholeheartedly, wearing clothes of honor; let our clothing be costly and not shameful. And save us from poverty, from vulnerability and shame, and allow me the merit of welcoming guests and dealing generously with every person. Send opportunities for me to give charity to those who deserve it, and let me not fall at the hands of dishonest people. Amen.

פרשת היראה

THE CHAPTER OF REVERENCE

In his final address before his death, Moses charges the people of Israel with loving God and holding Him in reverence, reminding them of God’s combined majesty and humility (see “May God give you,” page 764), and recounting the miracles He has done for them.

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you, but that you hold the LORD your God in awe, walk in His ways and love Him, serving the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul; keeping the commands of the LORD and His laws, as I charge you on this day, as a blessing. The sky, the highest heavens, the earth and all that fills it, belong to the LORD. Yet the LORD delighted in your ancestors, and loved them, and He chose their children after them – chose you – from all the other nations, as you see this day. Now, open your hearts, and stiffen your necks no longer. For the LORD your God is the God of gods, the LORD of lords, the great, mighty and awesome God, who does not favor the powerful, or accept any bribe. He does justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him bread and clothing. And you shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Hold the LORD your God in awe and serve Him, cling to Him and swear by His name. For He
