places were not allowed to go up the LORD’s altar in Jerusalem, but only to eat matzot among their brethren. The king commanded all the people, saying: “Observe the Pesah 1 Kings in honor of the LORD your God, as prescribed in this Book of the aie Covenant. For the Pesah had not been observed [with such ceremony] since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor throughout the times of all of the kings of Israel or the kings of Judea. Only in the eighteenth year of King Josiah was the Pesah observed so, in honor of the LORD in Jerusalem. Moreover, those who divined by a ghost or a familiar spirit, and the idols and the graven images and all the detestable things which had ever been seen in the land of Judea and Jerusalem were also destroyed by King Josiah, to uphold the covenant prescribed in the scroll which Hilkiyahu the priest had found in the Temple. And like him there was no king before him, who returned to the LORD with all his heart and all his soul and all his might, following all that was written in the Torah of Moses; and none like him came after. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Consecrate every firstborn Ex. 13:1-16 to Me; that which first opens the wombs of the children of Israel, their people and their livestock, shall be Mine. And Moses said to the people: Remember this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for it was with the strength of His hand that the LORD took you out of this place; no leaven may be eaten. You are going out today, in the month of Aviv. “When the LORD brings youto 1#v! the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites as He swore to your ancestors, giving you a land flowing with milk and honey, you must observe this rite in this month. For seven days you shall eat matzot, and the seventh day shall be a festival for the Lorb. Matzot shall be eaten all these seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen by you, nor shall any leaven be seen by you within
