[Egypt] had been circumcised, but all of those born in the desert on the way up from Egypt had not been circumcised. For the children of Israel had journeyed in the desert for forty years until all of the people, the men of battle who had left Egypt, had perished, for they had not heeded the voice of the LORD, the LORD had sworn to them that they were not to see the land which the LORD had promised to their forefathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. But their children who survived them — they were circumcised by Joshua, for they were still uncircumcised, as they had not been circumcised on the journey. When all of the people had been circumcised, they stayed in the camp until they healed. The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled the shame of Egypt away from you,” and he named that place Gilgal [“rolling”], and so it is known to this day. The children of Israel camped at Gilgal and they made the Pesah offering on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, on the plains of Jericho. They ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Pesah, matzot and roasted grain, on that very day. And the manna ceased [to come down] the next day, when they ate of the produce of the land, and the children of Israel no longer had manna; they ate of the crops of the land of Canaan that year. a man was standing opposite him, with his sword drawn in his hand; Joshua approached him and said to him, “Are you for us or are you for our adversaries?” [The man] said, “No, for I am captain of the LORD’s hosts; I have just arrived” — and Joshua fell upon his face to the ground and prostrated himself and said, “What words has my master to speak to his servant?” And the captain of the LORD’s hosts said to Joshua, “Remove the shoes from your feet, for the place upon which you are standing is sanctified.” And Joshua did as he had said. And Jericho was completely closed off for fear of the children of Israel: none went out and none came in. Some add: And the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land. Josh. 6:27
