of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations who do not come up to celebrate the Festival of Sukkot. On that day even the bells of the horses will be inscribed “sacred to the LORD’”; and the pots in the House of the LORD will be like basins before the Altar. And it will be: every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be sacred to the LORD of Hosts, and all those who come to sacrifice will take them and will cook in them; and on that day, there will be no more need for traders in the House of the LORD of Hosts. HAFTARA FOR THE SECOND DAY OF SUKKOT It was in the month of Eitanim, at the Festival (in the seventh month, that 1 Kings is), that all the people of Israel gathered together to King Solomon. All the elders of Israel came; and the Priests were bearing the Ark with them. The Priests and the Levites brought the Ark of the LORD, and the Tent of Meeting and all the holy vessels that used to be in it, up [to the top of Mount Zion]. And King Solomon, and all the people of Israel who had come with him before the Ark, brought offerings from the flock and the herd; offerings that could not be counted or listed, so numerous were they. The priests brought the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant to its place: to the Sanctuary of the House — to the Holy of Holies — to the shade of the Cherubim’s wings. For the Cherubim stretched their wings out over the place of the Ark; and they covered the Ark and its poles above. The poles themselves extended outwards, and their ends were discernible from the Holy Place, the Sanctuary, but they could not be seen from outside; and this is where they remain to this day. The Ark held nothing else but the two stone tablets that Moses had placed there at Horev, that the LORD had hewed out with the children of Israel as they left Egypt. And when the Priests left the Holy Place, the cloud filled the House of the LORD. And the Priests could not stand up to serve because of the cloud — for the glory of the Loro filled the LORD’s House. The construction took seven years. Eleven months later the formal con secration took place, the celebrations lasting for two weeks. The second week coincided with Sukkot, which thereafter became associated with the Temple and its consecration.
